Hajime Ichinose (collagehero) Played by: Bennu Canon: Gatchaman Crowds Original Canon Point: Post episode 6 New Canon Point: Post episode 12 (extended version) Any Significant Changes: Hajime hasn't visibly changed at all. A year has passed, but aside from having a different color scarf as part of her school uniform, she's still the same old Hajime on the surface. She's still relentlessly cheerful, she still babbles aimlessly and sings to herself nearly constantly, she still peppers her conversation with non sequiters that mean more than they seem. For anyone who doesn't know her well, you'd just have to take her word for it that time has passed at all.
In truth, though, Hajime has been through a lot. When she left there had only been some talk of an evil Gatchaman, but she hadn't given it much thought. She was more focused on what a superhero's role should be in modern society. Little did she know that reconciling her ideas on the matter with those of Rui Ninomiya, the boy who posed the question to her in the first place, would become necessary to save the world. Rui felt that there was no need for superheroes and that all of mankind could be inspired to step up and become heroes on their own instead of relying on a chosen few, but Hajime felt that everyone having something to offer the world as a collective meant that superheroes had their own special something to offer as well. In a way, both were right. The “evil Gatchaman,” they were about to face, an alien known as Berg Katze, was hellbent on turning humanity against itself and bringing about the destruction of Earth and the Gatchaman team and Rui's Galax social network site were Earth's last line of defense.
Katze and Hajime were like two sides of the same coin. Both child-like to the point of obnoxiousness, both whimsical and eccentric, but with opposing views of humanity. Where Hajime was a creator, Katze was a destroyer. Where Hajime operated on utmost faith in mankind's ability to work together and improve its existence, Katze relied on its ugliness to set it against itself and bring about its downfall. Possibly due to this, Hajime was not able to actually see Katze at first, not even his avatar on the Galax app. That didn't stop her from seeking him out to talk, though. When they first met, he posed a riddle to her, asking what the sweetest, most delicious thing was, with an answer of “other people's misery” in mind. After all, we all get tired of hearing about people's happiness, but never of hearing about their suffering, right? It wasn't too difficult for Hajime to figure out (though it was an excellent excuse to eat a lot of cake), and in the process she developed a strange sort of sympathy for Katze. She saw him sort of as a bored, lonely child, trying to get attention in any way that he could. He was so convinced that she would have to destroy him to defeat him, but that only showed that she understood him far better than he was capable of understanding her.
In the wake of the chaos Katze inflicted on Tachikawa, Hajime realized that it fell to her to take care of him once and for all. She became very withdrawn (for her) and began leaving half her meals and complaining about being hungry again, something she hadn't done since before becoming a Gatchaman. For Hajime, it was a sign of boredom and feeling incomplete and most likely stemmed from what she knew had to be done to defeat Katze and his influence once and for all. She said her goodbyes in her usually roundabout, cryptic way, even calling her mother to tell her that “no matter what happens” she'd “always be herself” and went to the train station to face down Katze once and for all. In the station, he attempted to taunt her and wear her down, but she stood firm in the face of his words, not allowing them to affect her and wearing down his confidence instead until suddenly she became aware of where he was. She reached out with her scissors and cut off his hair, then turned and kissed him, turning his method of manipulating humans against him and somehow banishing him, leaving only his Note, the physical embodiment of a Gatchaman's soul. What happened next was pure Hajime. She took Katze's Note and shoved it into her chest, forcing his soul inside her so that he could never break free to cause trouble again. In doing this, she became able to hear his voice in her head, but rather than letting his constant taunting and insults get her down, she took it as an opportunity to show him how fun life could be. And that's what she's spent the last year doing.
