Mentally-- while he's still just as excited about islands and adventure and is just as much a goofball as he ever was-- but there's a definite sober air about him, too. He knows how it feels to be defeated repeatedly and lose people he really cares about. He knows that he has to be strong enough to not just do what he wants and punch people at the end, but actively protect the people that he cares about--especially as they go into the increasing chaos of the New World.
He's also more interested in allies than he was... well "allies", gathering people and working together...well "working together" to reach a common... well "common" goal. He's thinking on a slightly broader scale than he was before and really pushing forward to accomplish his goals-- with a much greater idea of just what is wrong with the world.
