more Korra Book 3 spoilers

Bolin ( [personal profile] bolincredible )
Played by: Dani
Canon: Avatar: the Legend of Korra
Original Canon Point: Post Book 2 (Korra’s speech at the Southern Water Tribe).
New Canon Point: Post Book 3 (safe to say this form will contain spoilers)
Any Significant Changes: On the whole, Bolin’s personality hasn’t changed much between this canonpoint and the last. He’s still not the brightest bulb in the box, still very over-the-top emotional and excitable, optimistic, upbeat, terrible at reading people and in turn incredibly easy to read himself. What he has come into a little more freshly is some genuine confidence in himself and his abilities. Through the season we see Bolin struggle with his desire to metalbend, which he’s tried to do for years only to fail, and can see where he’s more or less resigned himself to being unremarkable in that regard. Not unhappy, but definitely frustrated with himself. Ultimately, by season's end, he doesn’t metalbend at all. He gets a new love interest, Opal, who encourages him to be himself instead of a horrible weird-sound-making guy when he's interested in a girl and wants to impress her, and he also takes a step up in challenging people, which is a change of pace.

Bolin and Mako have also found their extended family on their father’s side (as well as Bolin forcefully deciding to adopt a ragamuffin orphan, Kai, as their new little brother) by this canonpoint! It’s not to say they were alone in the world anymore after meeting Korra, Asami, and all the rest, but now they know they’re not completely unconnected to their parents or to a blood-related family. He’ll probably be very excited to share this with his crewmates or something, god knows him.

Overall, Bolin came out of Book 3 a little improved but not ultimately all that different! He has more genuine self-confidence and tries stepping up to the plate more, even if he doesn’t always succeed or have the best ideas when he does (his creativity and energy are occasionally successful in this regard where other tactics have failed the group). He’s more assertive with others and willing to challenge them on things, without steamrolling them with his own opinions in the process. Bolin is very light and even more openly excited about stuff than people than usual. We also learned that he can do some killer impressions of Mako and old people, and that he has no problems making casual conversation with deadly criminals who have captured him.

Abilities-wise, it’s dramatically unveiled in the finale that Bolin is actually capable of creating and manipulating lava! Didn’t really see that coming because they were geared towards his desire to metalbend all season, but it sure did become a thing. This holds to a lot of the natural limitations of earthbending, in that there has to be earth around to do it. And while Bolin was able to pick up the basics of making and manipulating it fairly quickly and on the fly, he’s far from being a master. He also still leans towards defense with it, probably because if he goes on the offensive he’s literally throwing face-melting magma at people and he’s not big on that? His bending seems improved overall from the first two books, though it’s obviously not going to be on any kind of master-trained level. He’s just gotten a little more effective at using it in combat situations, and at doing somewhat bigger things (launching people into the air with platforms, putting up walls, moving more general bulk, and making improbable precision shots with tiny rocks on occasion, etc. essentially, he's just been getting more practice and it shows).
