Month of the Race!

WELCOME JULY APPS!

Hello, hello! We just wanted to take a quick moment to fill you guys in on the current month-long event that's happening in the game, and also give you a heads up that you character will not be appearing on Isla Empieza this round. Please read below for all the info!

So July is the month of the GREAT GHOST RACE. This has been a long time coming, as the race has been hinted at and talked about by Scurvey Dog ([personal profile] scurveydog) for awhile now. We were finally given all the details about it by her assistant, Meep, just a couple weeks ago.

That post can be found here.

As you can see, the race started on July 5th and will run for the duration of the month as each crew rushes to hit a selection of islands and gather the tokens necessary to move forward.

There was another official event post from the mods that contained more details here.

If you're interested in reading the actual start of the race, which included a surprise appearance from the ghost of Davy Jones himself, you can check out that event log here.

So what does all this mean for your character?

Well, we wanted to give all new apps a chance to be as involved as possible. This is why all new characters this month are going to appear on PORT CHANCE instead of Isla Empieza, because that is where the race started! As the race is an annual occurrence in this world, there was a huge festival being thrown in the town that will last throughout the month. This is the description from a mingle log that we recently had:

Racing or not, there is much to do and see on the days coming up to the Great Ghost Race. Port Chance is in full festival mode with food, dancing, games of luck and skill, and fireworks every evening. There are figures of Davy Jones everywhere, from statuettes to cloth dolls to painted signs, as if the residents are trying to ward off bad luck. Otherwise there is an air of festive mood, so come and mingle! Enjoy the sights and sounds! Gawk at the wide reverse waterfall as it goes up the mountain, or the more regular waterfall that goes down the other side.

So as it's possible your character might be without a crew for a bit, we wanted to at least invite you to take part in the festivities!

But don't worry! Port Chance has many other things to offer, as well, if you don't want to be stuck in one place. It has several shipyards, so you're still perfectly able to get a ship and take off if you want. Miss Margie of the Backwater Brig will also have a stall set up in town to help you out. And she'll be bringing her special Nav with her, which is described on the shop page as follows:

You should know that there is a fully functioning Naviraimant in the shop that you can use to jump from Isla Empieza Port Chance to any ship! This Nav can be used as many times as is necessary without needing to be recharged, but it can only send you out. It's not a means of travel you can use to get back to Isla Empieza, Port Chance, or anywhere else.

And current characters in the game will of course still be using their journals, so we encourage posting to them and reaching out, and it's very likely your characters will be able to jump onto a crew's ship and get involved in the race!

Our intro log this month will be set at Port Chance, and there will be a separate thread for Miss Margie if you want to speak to her. Please feel free to use this to tag around, talk to the other new characters, or seek out any other characters who didn't participate in the race!

July's intro log can be found here.

And to keep everything in one place for you, this is the description of Port Chance from our Island Registry:

PORT CHANCE

[Direction from Isla Empieza]: East.

[Distance from Isla Empieza]: A little over two weeks.

[Terrain]: It looks rather like a tack standing on its head. The island has a wide circular base with a single mountain towering up into the air. The force of Davy's Current, the strongest in the ocean, turns the mountain into a double waterfall, water charging uphill one side and down the other. Though the mountain is relatively bare, the base is lush with forests, rivers, houses, and markets

[Weather]: Temperate but moderately so. Though there are a few storms that blow through, for the most part it always feels like a warm spring/early summer day.

[Is the island inhabited?]: Yes.

[If so, what is the culture like here?]: Port Chance is a mishmash of merchants and craftsmen. There is also a cluster of competing ship building companies: two who have an intense rivalry and a third tucked into the back which is sort of an Honest John's Ships 4 Cheep.

As a merchant town, it runs on money. So what and who you are is no problem as long as you don't cause trouble for the locals. You are also in charge of disposing your own bodies.

Also the mayor of the town, and the MC of a particular race that happens once a year, is a pretty chill guy--and his attitude reflects in the rest of the inhabitants for the most part.

[Island peculiarities]: It's the Starting Point and Ending Point of the yearly Great Ghost Race. What kind of race is that? Well, you'll have to wait and see.

And last thing, a post containing this week's strange weather and phenomena can be found here.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to comment here or talk to us on the mod plurk: [plurk.com profile] highseas We want everyone to have a chance to get involved if they want to, and hopefully we can all have fun!

Welcome to the game!!
